ACEH PHOTOGRAPH (late 19th century) -
S.L., s.n. 1890 ]. A large orig. photograph, mounted on thin boards, 35x27 cm. Depict. a group of, at least 10, barracks, with atap-roofing, surrounded by barbed wire. Inside the compound a small number of soldiers in their dark-blue uniforms are visible near the fence & in front of some buildings, also some white-clad civilians are present in background. Outside the fence on a small road through the field in front some figures are present: 2 uniformed men, 8 men mainly dressed in white with white helmets, 2 posing under an umbrella & on outer left-side an Acehnese is standing, probably a servant, in the backrow 3 other white-clad figures are standing under 2 umbrellas (white coats with sarong underneath) with on outer right-side another Acehnese, on the road at right-side near the gate with barbed wire a 2-wheel cart is to be seen. Palm-trees in background with probably (almost not visible) a Watch-tower (at left-side), some more figures are present at outer right-side of compound, within the fence, but almost invisible. There is no flag-pole inside the compound to be seen. Very probably a military encampment in the interior of Aceh at the end of the 19th century.
