The author, a flemish father Soc.Iesu, left in 1895 for Ceylon, as an instructor at the Papal Seminarium at Kandy. This work contains tog. XVII extensive letters to friends/fellow fathers in Belgium, containing extensive descriptions of country and people: their customs and belief[s], ceremonies, life-cycle, marriage, birth, divorce & death, means os subsistence, arts & crafts, incl. theatre, &c...interwoven with reports on the progress and struggle of Roman Catholic missionary labour. Orig.publ. in french, also in 1900. This dutch edn. is very scarce and much sought-after. Good copy. ((corners with very light shaving, paper with some very light and occas. marginal yellowing, foxing to margins of plates and on versos(blank).

Sadrach (c. 1835-1924) was the leader of a religious movement in Central-Java, initially affiliated with the Dutch Missions Society (NGZV), but who went its own way in a nominal relationship with a branch of the Catholic Apostolic Church, following Sadarach's denunciation as a heretic in 1891. (ex-library copy, covers somewhat shaved especially on corners, large pink library label at tail of spine, ex-library stamp on ti.-p., some minimal marginal spotting, a dull copy).

Their sufferings, the progress of missionary work, incl. extensive notes on the fate of the Chinese sisters. as written by: "Een Zuster van O.L.V. Amersfoort", which is an alis for Sister Borromeo Lurvink. provenance: a pencilled note by a niece of author on f.e.p! Good copy. Rare.
